Then the journey towards the heavens begins, reaching each heaven. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) reached the heaven, Gabriel said to the gatekeeper, “Open it.” He said, “Who?” He replied, “Gabriel.” The gatekeeper asked, “Is there anyone else with you?” He said, “Yes, with me, Muhammad (peace be upon him) who has been called, he prayed for me and spoke well of me.” Then he ascended to the first heaven, and he saw Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) sitting, with many shadows on his right and left. When he looked to the right, he would laugh, and when he looked to the left, he would cry. Seeing the Prophet (peace be upon him), he said, “Welcome, O righteous Prophet and O righteous son.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked Hazrat Gabriel, “Who are these?” He replied, “This is Adam (peace be upon him) and the shadows on his right and left are the souls of his children. Those on the right are from Paradise and those on the left are from Hell. That is why when they look at the right side, they laugh and when they look at the left side, they cry.” (Seerat al-Nabi by Syed Sulaiman Nadwi, p. 228, vol. 473)

Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) was taken to the second heaven. There, he saw Hazrat Yahya bin Zakariyya and Hazrat Isa bin Maryam and greeted them. Both of them returned the greeting and confessed their prophethood. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was an endless worshipper and used to cry out of fear of God. His father rebuked him for crying all the time and said, “Father, you yourself said that there is a chasm between Paradise and Hell which only those who cry out of fear of God can cross. There is a hadith that on the Day of Judgment, Hazrat Yahya will slaughter Death, which will be in the form of a sheep.
