The literal meaning of Isra is to carry or carry at night, that is, the Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Mecca to Jerusalem overnight. The word Miraj is derived from the root word aruj, which means to rise and ascend.
The Holy Quran states:
“Glory be to Him who took His servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, the surroundings of which We have blessed, that We may show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (Surah Bani Israel: 1)
Details of Miraj and Isra
One night, a year before the return from Taif and the migration, Hazrat Gabriel (peace be upon him) came with Buraq. Buraq was an animal that was larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, and its speed was so fast that every step was as far as the eye could see. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No.: 3207)
At that time, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was resting in the Hatim of the Kaaba. Hazrat Gabriel (peace be upon him) woke him up from his sleep, took him to Zamzam, and opened his chest and placed his pure heart in a golden bowl, which was full of faith and wisdom, and made it the purest. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No.: 162)
Beit al-Maqdis and the Imamate of the Prophets
Then he rode on Buraq and went to Beit al-Maqdis in the company of Hazrat Gabriel (peace be upon him). There he tied Buraq to the ring with which the Prophets tied their mounts. (Sirat Ibn Hisham, Volume 1)
Entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque, he performed two rak’ahs of prayer and led the Prophets in prayer. (Zad al-Ma’ad, Volume 1)
Choosing milk and wine
Hadrat Gabriel (peace be upon him) presented two vessels before him, one containing wine and the other containing milk. He preferred milk. Hazrat Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: “You have attained nature, you and your nation have been guided. If you had loved wine, your nation would have gone astray.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No.: 162)
According to some narrations, three vessels were presented to him, which contained milk, honey, and wine. (Zad al-Ma’ad, Vol. 1)
Mi’raj and the Journey to the Heaven
According to the book “From Light to Light” (p. 214), Ibn Ishaq stated: “A person narrated to me whom I do not consider a liar.” Hazrat Abu Saeed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “After what happened in Bayt al-Maqdis, a staircase was brought, which was very beautiful. This is the staircase towards which your dead look with their eyes open at the time of death. Then I was placed on it. (By Allah, He knows best) until I was taken to a gate in heaven, the Gate of the Guardians.
